Healthy Tip: Use Fresh Fruit Instead of Jelly!

Happy National Strawberry Day! Strawberries are one of my favorite fruits. Funny enough, I never used to enjoy them when I was younger. I thought they were too tart and simply not sweet enough. (I was also eating lots of refined sugars at the time!) Now, I’m so obsessed with these gorgeous, red berries. They’re packed with antioxidants, vitamins (including vitamin C, which is essential during the winter months), and fiber. Plus, here’s a tip that I discovered on my own: use fresh fruit instead of jelly for a healthier, clean, refined sugar-free PB&J!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I like to spread 1 tbsp natural peanut butter (I used Earth Balance creamy peanut butter) on toast (my go-to is always Ezekiel bread) and give it a few seconds for the PB to melt. I’ll then slice up some fresh strawberries (or grapes if I’m feeling like it’s a grape jelly day) and place them on top of my toast. You can stop and enjoy here, but today I sprinkled some ground flax and chia seeds, plus some bee pollen, right on top for a healthy, superfood Toast Tuesday!

Using fresh fruit instead of jelly is a quick and easy way to cut down on your daily refined sugar intake. Most jellies contain added sugar (or else they’d be too tart), and although I still eat jelly when I feel like it, I much prefer to eat the fresh fruit. It tastes so similar to jelly, since it’s the actual fruit the jelly is made of, and it also tastes much fresher. It’s more filling, too! No matter how you enjoy your National Strawberry Day, I hope it’s a sweet one!
